Building for the Future:
Our Application for The International Baccalaureate Program
In the spring of 2012, St. Francis of Assisi School made the decision to apply to become an International Baccalaureate school at the middle school level. The full implementation process will take two to three years, and accreditation is dependent on successful completion of a period of preparation.
The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a rigorous, externally accredited liberal arts program that prepares students to be world citizens. The IB middle years program integrates differentiated instruction in all areas of study while promoting inquiry, research, writing, and problem-solving. It also emphasizes strong arts and athletic programs, service, and second language instruction. Should St Francis of Assisi achieve IB status, it would be the first non-public school in Baltimore City to offer this program.
St. Francis will submit an application for IB candidacy for its middle school in February 2013. If accepted as a candidate school,
St. Francis will enter into a two- to three-year process of revising its curriculum, enhancing its resources, and training its teachers so as to align with the IB mission and methods. Upon being accepted for candidacy, the school will have access to specialized curriculum, the services of a consultant, and assistance with the preparation of the Application for Authorization. St. Francis has already begun to prepare for this implementation with teacher training, development of curriculum and policies, and enhancement of its facilities and resources to support the program.
