Our patron, Saint Francis, was known for his love of nature and living creatures. St. Francis of Assisi School builds upon this heritage by emphasizing our connections to the natural surroundings right here in our city. With Herring Run Park next door, Lake Montebello across the street, and a butterfly garden in our own backyard, we are able to step right into green spaces the moment we walk out the door.
Nature Studies
Students in the early elementary grades spend one period a week in Nature Studies. They explore the natural environment around SFA, observe the changing seasons in our butterfly garden, and engage in active exploration of the living world.
Outward Bound and North Bay
Thanks to the generosity of local foundations, our middle school students have had multiple opportunities for outdoor adventures over the past several years. Sixth graders spend a week at North Bay, learning about the Chesapeake and tackling some high and low ropes adventures. With Outward Bound, seventh graders have hiked the Appalachian Trail while learning the skills of wilderness camping and teamwork.
Classroom Opportunities
Sometimes nature comes indoors! One of the most beloved activities in our preschool is the annual hatching of baby chicks. Take a peek at this video to see the children's delight as they marvel at this miracle.
